About Patrice

Patrice Sulton stands at the forefront of systemic change within Washington, D.C.'s criminal justice landscape. An attorney, law school professor, and dedicated community organizer, her ambition extends beyond reform to a complete overhaul of a justice system facing critical challenges, notably its high incarceration rates.

Engaged in significant reform efforts, Patrice has made her mark on key commissions such as the Criminal Code Reform Commission, the Police Reform Commission, and the Jails & Justice Task Force. Her work has been pivotal in initiatives to rewrite D.C.’s criminal code, overhaul public safety approaches, and halve the jail population to foster a safer community environment.

My vision is for a justice system that uplifts every community member with fairness and dignity.

—Patrice Sulton

In her 15 years of practicing law, Patrice has represented clients across criminal and civil cases, gaining deep insights into the systemic barriers faced by communities of color, including over-policing, excessive sentencing, and unsafe jail conditions. These firsthand experiences were instrumental in founding the DC Justice Lab, an innovative nonprofit aimed at sparking dialogue around public safety and reimagining justice systems for equitable societal benefit.

Beyond her advocacy, Patrice is passionate about educating the next generation of legal professionals. As a Professorial Lecturer in Law at The George Washington University Law School, she imparts knowledge on constitutional law, criminal justice reform, and racial equity, inspiring students to drive meaningful change. Her excellence in teaching was recognized with the Distinguished Adjunct Teaching Award in 2021.

Patrice’s commitment to justice is further evidenced by her work with prestigious organizations such as the National Institute of Trial Advocacy and the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia, where she trains peers in trial skills and criminal law, highlighting her role as a mentor and leader in the legal community.
